From tenant experience to building operations, Josh Guttman talks about why Lane’s mission to connect the workplace inspired him to join the team as our new VP Revenue.
A property manager recently told me that when new talent enters the job market these days, the first thing they do is go building to building to see what kind of experience they might have there. Only then do they look at the list of tenants to see where to apply.
When I heard that, I almost laughed: how could someone consider the building they work in more important than what the company actually does? And it hit me how much the world has changed toward an “experience” mindset. From the moment they enter a workplace to the moment they leave, today’s professionals expect each and every interaction to be smart, seamless, and engaging.

This is precisely what Lane is on a mission to deliver, and having worked out of offices in major cities for many years, it wasn’t hard for me to get on board. Thanks to Lane’s workplace experience app, gone are the days where I’d be working past 7pm and have to call a service, enter my employee number, and wait for an after-hours pass to turn the lights back on. Gone are the days where I’d miss the tenant appreciation BBQ because I didn’t see the flyer. Gone are the days where I’d be shown 5 different building tools to book a room, register a guest, order food, or book a spin class at the building’s gym. All of this and more is now in the palm of my hand.
In the wake of what’s going on in the world, and in particular with everyone having to work from home, I’m a fundamental believer that physical offices aren’t going anywhere. People need somewhere to work, colleagues to work with, and an in-person experience that conference calls can’t ever fully replace.

But neither are things going back to the way they were. Instead, I believe that the office environment is going to keep evolving, only at a somewhat faster pace. With professionals returning to work gradually and in staggered phases, we can expect to see increased demand for flex space offerings, booking functionality, hot desking, efficient communications systems, and collaboration and ideation centers—in a word, a more flexible, intuitive, and technology-enabled workplace experience.
Lane has undergone explosive growth over the past few years, and even more so as landlords, property managers, and tenants look to adapt their office space and coordinate a safe return to work. My job as Vice President of Revenue is to package up all the greatness that Lane has already achieved for our customers and develop a scalable and repeatable go-to-market process to take Lane to the next level of growth. With such a great product in my hands, let’s just say I feel set up for success.
